Letters of Recommendation
A letter from a student's parents
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a letter giving our highest personal and professional recommendation for Ms. Melissa Sandfort.
Melissa tutored our son "EJ" during the 1993-1994 year in Chicago. EJ was in special education classes because he suffers from attention deficit disorder.
Melissa helped him with specific tutoring in his class work and with general organizational skills and study skills. She is a highly competent tutor. But more importantly, Melissa took a strong personal interest in EJ and worked very hard to instill confidence in him. She taught EJ that studying is fun and taught him that mastery of the subject matter is a source of personal pride.
Melissa has our highest professional recommendation for her tutoring skills and our highest personal recommendation because she is a great person.

A letter from a student
Rome fell, Pearl Harbor was bombed, Korea was divided, JFK was assassinated, Reagan was shot-- er, I mean re-elected-- Cosby was canceled, Bruce and Brandon Lee were mysteriously killed, Sean Connery lost a battle to male-pattern baldness, Michael Jordan left the game of basketball, Melissa Sandfort is retiring from her position of being our writing teacher. The world will never be the same...
I've known you for nearly two years now. During those two years, I think I can safely say my writing skills have improved. I credit you for having a lot to do with my success. You've made me realize my potential, and your encouraging words have given me confidence in my writing.
I also know from experience that you make an outstanding teacher. You have a gift at making those around you comfortable. You're one of the few teachers I have had that makes learning an enjoyable experience. I don't think I will ever have as grand of a time learning vocabulary.
You've been inspiring and very supportive.

A letter from a teacher
Melissa Sandfort has my strongest recommendation. She is one of the top students I've worked with in my teaching career, both academically and in terms of personal qualities.
Most importantly for me as a teacher is the fact that Melissa has fun with history; she brings a refreshing intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm into the classroom. Her essays are always thought provoking and infused with a sophisticated sense of humor.
In addition to being a top student, Melissa contributes to the [school] community in many other ways. Because she is more focused and self-directed than many of her peers, she is able to balance academic, extracurricular and personal commitments while giving quality time and effort to all of them. For example, her peer tutoring is becoming a legend in its own time. She has a gift for communicating difficult concepts in terms that even the weakest student can understand. Many students come to her regularly for help because she uses humorous, down-to-earth imagery that they can both relate to and remember.
